Pulihora

Pulihora or Chitrannam (Telugu: పులిహోర) is a common preparation of rice in South Indian cuisine. Puli means "sour taste", thus Pulihora roughly translates as "sour rice". It is also known as "tamarind rice" or "lemon rice". Pulihora is found mostly in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu ("puliyodharai") and Karnataka ("puliyogare"). Saddi is an old name for it in the Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts of northern Andhra Pradesh.

In Andhra Pradesh it is considered the poor man's festival food, and is frequently given as prasadam in temples. Devotees after darshan of the God queue to get pulihora.Pulihora mixes are available commercially.

Pulihora tastes sour, spicy, hot and salty at the same time. It is considered to be a good stimulant for a dull appetite. It is easy to cook, inexpensive and is filling.

This dish is cooked as a holiday dish and during festivals. It is also distributed in temples as "Prasad". Pulihora is a common travel diet for Andhra people because it can be stored for a couple of days without geting spoiled.

Some versions of pulihora are made with un-ripe mangoes, sour pomegranate and Lemon.
