Treaty of Rawalpindi

Treaty of Rawalpindi

The Treaty of Rawalpindi (signed on August 8, 1919 and amended November 22, 1921) was a treaty made between the United Kingdom and Afghanistan during the Third Anglo-Afghan War. In it, the United Kingdom recognised Afghanistan's independence, agreed that British-Indian empire would never extend past Khyber Pass, and stopped British subsidies to Afghanistan. The Treaty of Rawalpindi is celebrated on Afghan Independence Day, August 19 as part of the Great Game between the Russians and the British that made the Afghans virtually an artificial buffer zone between their Empires.
