Kuzhalmannam or Coyalmannam is a small village in the Palakkad district of Kerala, south India.

Name

Kuzhal means flute and Mannam means slow in malayalam language. Its said that Lord Krishna played his flute softly standing at this place.

Overview

Coyalmannam is one such distinct destination located in the district of Palakkad. About 15 km away from the city, this ‘granary of the south’ still abounds with vast stretches of paddy fields edged with coconut plantations. The ‘Mattuchanda’ or Cattle market of ‘Coyalmannam’, held on every Saturday; over 15000 cattle are brought to a vast ‘maidan’ where they are auctioned. The oxen race of Erumayoor, adjacent to Coyalmannam draws crowds.

Temples

There are a number of temples in this community, including Azhakath Shiva Temple, Vadakunathan shiva temple and Bharatpuram temple are distinct in their own rights. The community also has a Bharatpuram temple dedicated to ‘Bharath’ the brother of ‘Lord Sri Rama’.

Azhakath Mahadeva Temple, Kulavanmokku, Kuzhalmannam

Azhakotha Mahadeva temple at Kuzhalmannam is one of the ancient and famous temples in the region. Famous festivals related to the temple are Aaratt (usually at the end of December/beginning of January) and Sivaratry (Feb/March) period. 'Azhakath Kshema Samiti' (Temple development committee) and 'Azhakath bajana Sangham'& Azhakath Seva Sangam are three group of committees involved in the development of the temple.

Kaalimuthy Bhagavathi Temple, Kulavanmokku, Kuzhalmannam

The most famous festival of Kaalimuthy Bhagavathy temple is VISHU VELA which is usually on the fourth day after the Vishu festival. The temple is kept opened for devotees only on the 1st of every malayalam month. The temple will be closed on the rest of the days. However devotees will get special permission and key of the temple if they want to perform pooja or darshan.

Festivals

Coyalmannam's range of splendor and colour are in full view during the annual Ulsavams and celebrations. The 10 day ‘Kali’ or Folk dance competitions is held annually. People from far and wide participate in intensely orchestrated demonstration of physical dexterity and performance through dance forms which are categorized as ‘Vattakali’, ‘Porat’, ‘Malayar’, ‘Kutachakiliar’ etc. There are also regular temple festivals.

Culture

Coyalmannam assembly constituency (SC) is part of Alathur Lok Sabha constituency.^[1] Here in Pulpurmannam is also located the house of the famous Kathakali artiste (Late) Karunakara Pannikker, who was famously known by his Kathakali character name as 'Panchali Pannikker'. He was instrumental in setting up Rupayatan in Mumbai, and introducing Kathakali art form to Mumbai, then called Bombay. He, along with his student and later son - in - law, another great Kathakali exponent by the name of (Late) Raghavan Teyunni Nair, also known by his Kathakali name as 'Puthana Raghavan Nair' have their roots here. There is a clear display of unity in diversity here, many different communities and religion live together with greart harmony and collaboration. Nair, Ezava, Ezhithachan, Iyers, Chetiyars, Ashari, Thattan, Mannan, Muslims, Christians. Different cultered people enrich the vibrant and unique culture. Nethaji Arts & Sports Club,Chedayanal,Near Azhakoth Mahadeva Temple, is one of the main club in Kuzhalmannam panchayath.Hundred and above members of this club are involved in all the cultural activities of the panchayath, and also done medical camps, social services,cricket tournaments etc. Azhakoth Bajana Sangam and Azhakoth Seva Sangam had a major role in the development of the temple,like Kumbabishekam, Maha Shivarathri, Aaratumaholsavam etc.
