UzDaewooAuto

UzDaewooAvto was set up as a joint venture between Daewoo and the Uzbek government located in Asaka city, Andijan, Uzbekistan. UzDaewooAuto was set up on a parity basis in 1992 by state-owned Uzbek automaker Uzavtoprom and South Korean automaker Daewoo Motor.

In 2005, the stake owned by the bankrupt South Korean firm was taken over by the state-owned Uzavtoprom (also known as Uzavtosanoat), which took full control of the company.Uzavtoprom bought Daewoo's stake for US$110 million, according to some media reports. Current vehicles produced are the Matiz, the Daewoo Nexia, the Daewoo Lacetti and the Damas van. Around half UzDaewoo's output is exported to Russia. The capacity of the plant is 200,000 cars a year.

Korean Daewoo firm is owned by the American General Motors, which also has the right on the brand. On the 1 August, 2007, the Uzbek government announced that it were in negotiations with the US General Motors to start the production of Chevrolet Rezzo and Chevrolet Epica. Also, a Chevrolet Captiva shall be produced for the local market only, when the negotiations fully succeed.

UzDaily.com [http://www.uzdaily.com/?c=118&a=2065] reported that the plant will start production of new cars from 1 January 2008. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov signed a resolution to organize construction of new model of cars at UzDaewooAuto.

The document said the Uzbek car maker will organize production of sedan Chevrolet Epica (Daewoo Toska), truck Chvrolet Captiva (Daewoo Winstrom), mini-van Chevrolet Takuma (Daewoo Rezzo).

The resolution said that UzDaewooAuto will produce 1,008 units of Epica, 696 units of Captiva and 888 units of Takuma.

The recent report said that GM Daewoo plans to buy some stake in UzDaewooAuto. The reports said the sides are holding talks.
