Web Browser for S60 or the S60 OSS Browser, is the default web browser for the S60 mobile phone platform. It is the default browser for many old phones running on the Symbian mobile operating system and all new phones running on Symbian. It was developed by Nokia. The browser is based on a port of Apple Inc.’s open source WebCore and JavaScriptCore frameworks which form the WebKit rendering engine that Apple uses in its Safari Web browser. These frameworks were themselves based on software ported from the KDE project (KHTML and KJS).[1][2]

Unlike some other mobile phone browsers which reformat pages to a suitable width for small mobile phone screens, Nokia's web browser allows the user to see a thumbnail image of the full web page which they call "mini maps" and allows users to zoom into the areas they want to read.[3]

The initial version was lacking support for the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and Wireless Markup Language (WML); version 2 of the browser introduced support for these standards.[4] Hence the Nokia Services (WAP) browser was the default browser on initial device shipments of this platform. There are two types of S60 browser

Contents

S60v2 Browser

Supports:

  • It supports HTML.
  • It supports WAP 2.0(xHTML).
  • It supports cookies and JavaScript.
  • Wide web pages can be formatted for mobile viewing.
  • We can download more than one files.

Drawbacks:

  • Multi-window browsing is not supported.
  • It doesn't compress pages, which puts a greater strain on the phone's processor and bandwidth usage

S60v3 browser

This browser is more advanced than the s60v2 browser.

Supports:

  • HTML
  • WAP 2.0(xHTML)
  • Cookies and JavaScript
  • Multi-window browsing
  • Many files (up to 10) can be downloaded at once.

S60 5th edition

The S60 5th edition (i.e. touch screen) supports Kinetic scrolling[5]

Disadvantages:

  • Copy paste support is poor. If you have a device with no Control-key or Pen-key, you can not copy paste in most web forms. With older Nokia models, like N95 or E90, this was not a problem, as N95 had a Pen-key and E90 had a Control-key. New N86 and N97 do not have such keys. However, E72, which was released in 11/2009, has a Control-key.
  • Flash is only supported on newer more powerful handsets (although Flash Lite on other devices allows support for basic flash animations).
  • some jQuery effects are not supported (fadeIn and slideDown)

Nokia Browser v7.3 (Symbian^3 / Symbian Anna)

Phones: Nokia N8, Nokia E6, Nokia E7, Nokia C6, Nokia C7, Nokia X7

User interface[6] supports:

  • Multi-window browsing
  • Kinetic scrolling
  • Multi-touch gestures pinch open and pinch close for zoom in/out (only for capacitive touch devices)
  • Split-screen virtual keyboard support for live update of input fields
  • Bookmarks
  • RSS Web feeds
  • VGA screen support

Supported Techniques[7]:

  • HTML 5 support
  • CSS 3 support:
  • JavaScript 1.8 support
  • Viewport meta tag support
  • Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) support
  • Flash Lite 4.0.3 support

Apart from Symbian^3 devices (Nokia N8, E7-00, C7-00, C6-01) and new devices (among others Nokia E6 and Nokia X7), some older devices will also get an update of the browser with a firmware update.[8]The Nokia N97 will not be updated, in contrast to the Nokia N97 mini.

Nokia Browser v7.4 (Symbian Belle)

Phones[9]: Nokia N8, Nokia E6, Nokia E7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia C7, Nokia X7, Nokia 603, Nokia 700, Nokia 701

  • Previous/next page, Bookmarks, Multi-window navigation, menu buttons at the bottom
  • Direct access to RSS Web feeds from the menu
  • Links can be shared via SMS, Email, or Bluetooth

  • Pinch open and pinch close (unpinch) for zoom in/out (only for capacitive touch devices)
  • Double tap at the top for page up
  • Double tap at the bottom for page down
  • Double tap in the middle for resizing
  • Tap and hold (long press) on links opens a menu to copy the link or open a new window
  • Tap and hold (long press) and subsequent pan to select text for cut-and-paste

History

Nokia announced the project in June 2005,[11] and made it available in November.[1] At the 2006 World Wide Web Conference, Nokia announced that it was releasing the source code for its port of WebKit back to the community.[12]

The version included on Nokia phones is named the Nokia Mini Map Browser, after the afore-mentioned "mini map" feature.[13]
