Gregory Russell Paulus (born July 3 1986) is a college basketball player and the starting point guard on the Duke University men's basketball team.

Biography

Born in Medina, Ohio, Paulus moved to New York from Appleton, Wisconsin at a young age and grew up in the Syracuse suburb of Manlius, New York.

High school career

Greg Paulus attended Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, New York, where he played football and basketball and earned all-state honors in each sport at least three times. In football, Paulus played quarterback and led his football team to a Class-AA state championship in 2004. He played in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, was named boys' football Gatorade National Player of the Year and was rated as the top QB by USA Today. In basketball, Paulus averaged 23.5 points, eight assists and six rebounds per game, making him the 11th-leading scorer in New York history. During his senior year, he averaged 26.8 points, 8.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game. Paulus was also ranked as the number one point guard prospect out of high school according to rivals.com and scout.com.

College career

Paulus received scholarship offers to play football at the University of Miami and Notre Dame. He also received basketball scholarship offers from Duke University, Syracuse University and Notre Dame. He chose to play basketball and joined the Duke Blue Devils. Greg Paulus and Joe Mauer each have the unusual distinction of being a Gatorade National High School Football Player of the Year who did not play football at the collegiate level.

Paulus was a member of the Duke team that finished with a 32-4 record and won the ACC regular season and tournament championship. Paulus led the the ACC in assists per game at 5.2. He set a Duke freshman record for assists in a game with 15 (with only 3 turnovers) in a 104-77 home victory over Valparaiso on December 18 2005; that assist total was only one away from the all-time single-game Duke record of 16, set by NCAA career assist leader Bobby Hurley.

His 187 assists ranked third behind Bobby Hurley (288 in 1990) and Jay Williams (220 in 2000) among the freshman assist leaders in Duke history.

Paulus injured his foot during the preseason. After the season, Coach Chris Collins said Paulus struggled because he had a tarsal coalition, and it was corrected through surgery; he has since fully recovered. He had a career high on March 15 2007 with 25 points against Virginia Commonwealth.

Junior
