It was renamed Cardinal Stritch College in 1946 forSamuel Cardinal Stritch of Chicago, who was archbishop of theArchdiocese of Milwaukee during the 1930s. The institution became Cardinal Stritch University in 1997. In 1998, the university expanded to offer its first doctoral program.The university also has campuses located in

Athletics
The Cardinal Stritch Wolves compete in the
National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and theChicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). Both the Men's and Women's Basketball teams are consistently among the leaders in the CCAC and routinely make it to the NAIA National Basketball Tournament.Previously Cardinal Stritch was a member of the Lake Michigan Conference and won the Men’s Basketball Championship in 1987. The men's team also was a five time NLCAA Great Lakes District Men's basketball champion in the mid 1980's.
Women’s coach Rich Pinella is widely considered one of the best women’s small school coaches in the country.
