Auður Jónsdóttir

Auður Jónsdóttir is an Icelandic writer born in Reykjavik in 1973. She is an author and freelance journalist and has contributed articles, essays and interviews to various magazines and newspapers. Her fiction debut, the short story Gifting (The Wedding), was published in the literary journal Andblær in 1997 .

Auður has had stories printed in various newspapers and anthologies. Her first novel, Stjórnlaus lukka (Bliss, 1998), was nominated for the Icelandic Literature Prize in 1998 . Since then her output has included further novels, as well as books for children and teenagers, such as Skrýtnastur er maður sjálfur (One self is the strangest of all, 2002) , a portrait of her grandfather, the Nobel prize-winning author Halldór Laxness.

Fólkið í kjallaranum (The People in the Basement), won the 2004 Icelandic Literature Prize followed by a nomination for The Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2006 . Auður’s most recent work, the novel Tryggðarpantur (Depositum) was nominated for the Icelandic Literature Prize in 2006.

Auður is currently living in Barcelona, Spain where she studies and writes. She is married to Thorarinn Leifsson, the Illustrator.
