History of Southwestern College

On 2 February 1960, Phoenix-area pastors of the Sun Valley Conservative Baptist Association held a meeting to discuss the possibility of opening a nearby denominationally-based college. After further meetings, the pastors agreed to begin college-level instruction beginning in the Fall semester 1960. Originally, classes were held in a local Baptist church while leaders developed a 35 acre campus in Paradise Valley West. The college made continual strides, and in 1975, the Arizona State Board of Education approve the institution's burgeoning program of education. As the years progresed, Southwestern continued to add new programs at attract a wider cross section of students. Today, it remains a regionally accredied degree-granting institution.

Today, [http://www.southwesterncollege.edu/ Southwestern College] offers degrees at the bachelor's level in: Christian ministries, business administration, behavioral health, Biblical studies, elementary education, secondary education, family studies, and music ministry, and music education.

Students are required to be born-again believers in a Christian church. Regularly-scheduled chapel attendance is mandantory for full-time (at least 12 credit hours) students, as well. The college also requires that students maintain a minimum standard of conduct based on Biblical principals including abstinence from extramarital sex, alcohol and drugs, and a promise that they will not view or listen any form of media (including movies and music) that would be "immoral or spiritually debilitating."

Mission Statement
*Southwestern College provides a biblically integrated education that prepares its graduates to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in ministries and professional occupations.

The goal of the college is to graduate students who will:
*Acquire biblical concepts that will enable them to evaluate knowledge in the light of biblical truth and apply that knowledge in everyday life.
*Understand people as a special and beloved creation and act toward them in a responsible and compassionate way as modeled by Jesus Christ.
*Develop critical judgment and analytical reasoning skills.
*Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary for competence in a vocation.
*Participate in the ministry of the local church to encourage spiritual growth, and help fulfill the Great Commission (Matt. 28: 19-20).
