"Afrodisiac" is a song by American singer Brandy. Written by Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley, Isaac Phillips, Kenisha Pratt and Kenneth Pratt for her same-titled fourth studio album, "Afrodisiac" (2004), it was released as the album's second single outside North America during the third quarter of 2004 (see 2004 in music). The song reached number 9 in China and number 11 in the United Kingdom, and moreover peaked within the top 40 in Australia, France, Ireland and Switzerland.

Writing and recording

"Afrodisiac" was one of the first songs on the same-titled album Brandy, longtime contributors Kenisha and Kenneth Pratt, and producer Timbaland worked on in the Hit Factory Criteria recording studios in Miami, Florida. The singer has declared the song her favorite cut on the recording: "You can hear the yearning for love," Brandy said of the song in an interview with "Ebony". "I never had an aphrodisiac in my life until now."cite web|title="Brandy is back with a new baby new album and a new love!"|work=Ebony Magazine|url=http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1077/is_10_59/ai_n6121605|accessdate=2007-09-22] Contentually, the pop and dance music influenced song deals with the protagonist's addicted passion for a special person, whom she declares her very own "aphrodisiac."cite web|title="Brandy is back with a new baby new album and a new love!"|work=Ebony Magazine|url=http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1077/is_10_59/ai_n6121605|accessdate=2007-09-22]

The song was one of three tracks that had leaked more than a half year before the official release date, a fact, which made it an early candidate to become the album's lead single. When "Talk About Our Love" was picked as first single, Timbaland protested the decision in several magazine interviews. Even Brandy herself proclaimed that the album's single choice was finalized by manager Benny Medina and the heads of Atlantic Records, while the singer herself had favoured the title track to lead the album.

Music video

The single's music video was directed by Matthew Rolston and entirely shot in a filming studio in Los Angeles, California.cite web|title=Video Search|work=mvdbase.com|url=http://www.mvdbase.com/video.php?id=34027|accessdate=2007-09-23] It was shot over thirteen hours and choreographed by Laurie Ann Gibson, best known for her work on MTV's "Making the Band" series. Brandy declared the clip a "crazy performance-entertainment-video."cite web|title="Making of "Afrodisiac"|work=Youtube|url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=G-gVFZwtlYY|accessdate=2007-09-23]

The plotless video concept was developed during a single video conference with all involved parties.cite web|title="Making of "Afrodisiac"|work=Youtube|url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=G-gVFZwtlYY|accessdate=2007-09-23] Inspired by the song itself, Rolston decided to visualize the sung-about afrodisiac as a liquid, eventually arranging the construction of a water-flooded "outtrack world" that shows Brandy and her dancers performing in an ankle-deep basin and in front of water-reflecting walls respectively.cite web|title="Making of "Afrodisiac"|work=Youtube|url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=G-gVFZwtlYY|accessdate=2007-09-23] With a view to create a "very simple video," styles and clothes are mainly influenced by white, gold and black color.cite web|title="Making of "Afrodisiac"|work=Youtube|url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=G-gVFZwtlYY|accessdate=2007-09-23]

Both the video and an accompanying produced "Making of" clip were released as on a DVD Single. [ [http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0005F41FA "Afrodisiac" DVD on "Amazon.co.uk"] ]
