Mattur (also spelled Mathur, Matthur and Mathoor) (Kannada: ಮತ್ತೂರು, Sanskrit: मत्तूरु) is a small village near the city of Shivamogga in Karnataka, South India, known for the usage of Sanskrit for day-to-day communication.[1][2]

Mattur has a Rama Mandira, a Shivalaya, Someshwara temple and Lakshmikeshava temple.

Mattur's twin village, Hosahalli, shares almost all the qualities of Mattur. Hosahalli is situated across the bank of River Tunga. These two villages are almost always referred to together.[3]

Mattur and Hosahalli are known for their efforts to support Gamaka art, which is a unique form of singing and storytelling in Karnataka. This is one of some of the rarest villages in India where Sanskrit is spoken as regional language. Here more than 90% of the population of this villange know Sanskrit.
