"Pet Sematary Two" (1992) is a horror film directed by Mary Lambert. The screenplay was written by Richard Outten. It is the sequel to the 1989 film "Pet Sematary", which was based on the novel by Stephen King.

Plot

Following the accidental death of his actress mother, Jeff Matthews (Edward Furlong) moves with his veterinarian father Chase (Anthony Edwards) to the small town of Ludlow, Maine. No one lives in Ludlow for long without hearing about the tragedy of the Creed family and the dark mythology of the cursed Indian burial ground which lies beyond the local pet cemetery. After his friend Drew's dog Zowie is killed by his abusive stepfather, Gus (Clancy Brown), Jeff witnesses the power of the "Mi'kmaq burial ground" first-hand when he and Drew bring Zowie back to life.

After this, Zowie is taken care of by Doctor Chase, who strangely cannot hear a heartbeat. Chase sends a blood sample to a lab, and the results arrive shortly: Zowie's cells have completely deteriorated and are no different from a dead dog (which he is, after all). Meanwhile, Jeff and his friend Drew go to Pet Sematery on Halloween for a night of horror stories about the Creed tragedy when Drew's stepfather comes and starts beating him. Zowie rushes out of the shadows and protects Drew by killing Gus with a severe mauling. Desperate, the boys bury Gus at the "Mi'kmaq". That very night, Drew discovers that he's come back to life, but with drastically changed characteristics. The undead Gus laughs manically, exhibits stiff movements, and is generally silent. He is also much more crude and sadistic at expressing himself, as seen when he raped his wife.

Not long after, Zowie and Gus both start to act much more violently. Zowie breaks out of Dr. Chase's house and eats the three kittens that he was going to give away for adoption (one of which Jeff already has), and mauls Dr. Chase while he's dreaming. Dr. Chase survives, but is shaken. Meanwhile, Jeff and a bully, Clyde, are getting into a fight over Clyde's insults of Jeff's long-dead mother. Jeff is just about to have his nose cut off by the spokes of his own bike when Gus shows up. Gus, in a surprising act of humanity, gives Jeff time to run before pinning Clyde down, catching his scarf, snapping his neck and chopping his face to bits with the wheels of his motorcycle. Drew witnesses the entire scene. Gus, sadistically laughing, wipes his face with Clyde's blood and goes after Drew, who is trapped inside his own house with Zowie. After a chase, Drew manages to escape through the upstairs window and gets in the car with his mother. Gus chases them down the highway with his police car, killing both of them by ramming their car into the incoming path of a truck.

Meanwhile, Jeff becomes more and more obsessed with reanimating his mother. He has Gus exhume her and buries her at Indian burial ground. Meanwhile, Dr. Chase gets a notification of his wife's exhumation and rushes to Gus's house. Before entering, he is severely mauled by Zowie on his left shoulder, but manages to shoot and kill the dog (the second time). Muttering "I hate that dog", he enters Gus's house, only to find the crazed man waiting for him. Shooting Gus in his chest has little effect on him, and just as Gus is about to kill Chase with an electric drill, Chase manages to retrieve his gun. He presses it against Gus's jaw and clicks the trigger three times. Gus just laughs, but the fourth time, Gus's head is blown off, and he finally dies (again). Chase fires a few more shots into him just to make sure, and stumbles into his car to get back to his own house.

Jeff's mom has come back to life, and the first thing she does is to stab and kill his stepmother. Chase arrives and sees his son embracing his undead wife, but having witnessed Gus and Zowie, he is unmoved and tells Jeff to get away from her. An undead Clyde then arrives, his entire face mutilated, and demands to fight Jeff again. They wrestle, and Jeff manages to stick a power cord in Clyde's mouth, blowing off his head. Jeff's undead mom sets the mood by setting the entire attic on fire and ripping the doorknob off the door. Finally, Jeff grabs an axe, hacks through the door, and helps his father downstairs. Jeff's mother is melting by the heat of the flames, and she tries to convince him to stay by muttering, "I love you." Jeff is almost convinced to stay, but he knows that his real mother is truly dead. He leaves with Dr. Chase, leaving his "mother" to melt into a laughing skeleton who repeatedly shouts "DEAD IS BETTER!" The next day, Jeff and Dr. Chase move out of Ludlow, Maine, starting a new life and leaving their past behind. Thankfully, Jeff's kittens survive.

Trivia

* The Maine sportscaster, the late Frank Fixaris, makes a brief cameo. His voice is featured covering a Maine Mariners hockey game that is of particular interest to Drew.
* At the time of release the Maine Mariners [AHL] hockey club had moved to Providence, Rhode Island and become the Providence Bruins
* The current DVD version, like the theatrical and VHS versions before it, are devoid of some graphic violence which was cut in order to avoid an NC-17 rating.
* At the end of this film, Jeff's mother repeatedly shouts "Dead is better!", which is a line spoken by Jud Crandall in the original film.
