Batta, also is an Anglo-Indian military term, probably derived from the Canarese "bhatta" (rice in the husk), meaning a special allowance of pay made to officers, soldiers, or other public servants in the field.

The amount and circumstances of "batta" given were complex and made up a substantial amount of the pay received by soldiers. Argument sover allowances led to instances of near-mutiny.

With the incorporation of the Honourable East India Company's military forces into the Crown's army, much of their allowance of batta was lost since the British Army did not receive it.

Batta is also a family name distributed all over the world. the majority of Batta name comes from Europe, a minority from India and a sprinling from the mid east countries. Batta means duck in arabic. The name probably originated in Hungary Romania region.Fact|date=June 2007 This name is also found in old England, mostly in Wales.In olden times a variety of spellings have been used, like Batte, Battey, Bhatte etc

"Batta: Khatri Indian lastname" Some of them believe they are children nodes to todarmal batta (one of the nine gems of Great Akbar). Some says they are siblings of 10th Sikh Guru. But all the fact is Batta Surname is mostly with Indian Punjabi people from North part.

Batta is family group originating from the villages of Punjab in India. Their caste is Khatri which is otherwise known as Khastriya according to Indian caste system. These are Hindu people living in the north western part of India especially in the Punjab area.
