Our story starts with a young boy named Rowan. He is timid and shy while all the other children of Rin were tough so he had been given the job of herding the bukshah which are cow like animals that produce milk, cheeses, wool, help plow the fields and take goods around during long journeys. Unfortunately the water in which the precious bukshah drink from started to stop flowing which could lead to many unwanted deaths. Rowans little sister, Annad becomes sad after this happens because her favourite bukshah, Star, might die as well. “Rin depended on the bukshah. Without them, the village too will die “. This phrase is important because it shows use the importance of the life of these kind gentle beasts. The matter since unavoidable is handled in a town meeting where we meet many new important characters who are: Val and Ellis the Millers, Bronden the Maker of Furniture, Allun the Baker, Marlie the Weaver and Strong Jonn of the Orchard. The townspeople decide that the problem is at the top of the Mountain for the water’s source is the peak of the Mountain itself. Since the townspeople do not know the way, they seek help from the Wise Woman, Sheba. Strong Jonn and Marlie volunteer to go because they knew Sheba better than anyone else did. Strong Jonn decides that Rowan should go and to bring two of the finest cheeses from the coolhouse because Strong Jonn knew that Sheba would want a good trade for her wisdom. Soon Rowan arrives at the hut where Strong Jonn and Marlie had been anxiously waiting for his arrival. Inside Sheba’s hut rowan is ordered to give Sheba the cheeses. She likes the cheeses so she decides to give Marlie, Strong Jonn and Rowan information about the mountain. At first Sheba mocks Marlie and Strong Jonn’s fears but Strong Jonn says the only one scared is Rowan. Sheba after hearing this says if Rowan is the only one scared he has some sense and it wouldn’t hurt if he led the group. Sheba reaches inside of her basket beside her and fast as lightning throws a stick at Marlie which Marlie avoids and hits Rowan. Rowan starts to bleed but Sheba goes on and tells them a riddle: Seven hearts the journey make,Seven ways the hearts will break.Bravest heart will carry on,When sleep is death and hope is gone.Look in the fiery jaws of fear,And see the answer white and clear.Throw away all thoughts of home,For only then your quest is done.

Sheba falls asleep and the three walk out and head for the town and consult the people about the happenings. Since what is done is done they decide to take the main characters already mentioned. The Jonn then decides to set out at dawn with the others.
