B. S. Mardhekar

B. S. Mardhekar

Bal Sitaram Mardhekar (1909-1956) brought about a radical shift of sensibility in Marathi poetry. He was educated in Pune and London, and worked with the All India Radio till his death. His earlier collection was 'Shishiraagam' was a product of typical Ravi Kiran Mandal poetry: sentimental, lyrical and conventional. But his later 'avant-garde' collection brought about a storm in Marathi literary world. Similar to what Baudelaire did for the French poetry, he did for Marathi poetry by bringing in the decadent urban ethos. He was influenced by the Marathi bhakti poetry and the poetry of T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden. He was also an influential crictic and an experimental novelist. His novels are attempts to bring in the stream of consciousness technique into Marathi.
