In botanical nomenclature, an orthographical variant (abbreviated orth. var.) is a variant spelling of the same name. For example, Hieronima[1] and Hyeronima[2] are orthographical variants of Hieronyma. One of the spellings is to be treated as the correct one.[3]
Priority starts with this date of publication, if not otherwise regulated. In the above case, the spelling of Hieronyma has been conserved and is to be used.
An inadvertent use of one of the other spellings has no consequences: the name is to be treated as if it were correctly spelled. Any subsequent use is to be corrected.[3]
Orthographical variants are treated in Art 61 of the ICBN.[3]
In zoology, orthographical variants in the formal sense do not exist; mis-spellings are treated as lapsus or other form of inadvertent error. Apart from the first reviser being able to choose one variant for mandatory further use, they generally have no further formal standing. Inadvertent mis-spellings are treated in Art. 32-33 of the ICZN.
