The Carrier Corporation is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and a global leader in the commercial refrigeration and food service equipment industry. A wholly owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, Carrier is a $12.5 billion company with over 43,000 employees serving customers in 170 countries on six continents.

History

Willis Carrier is credited with inventing modern air conditioning in 1902. The corporation bearing his name succeeded in marketing its air conditioner to the residential market in the 1950s, creating a revolution in which formerly sparsely populated areas such as the American Southwest became home to sprawling suburbs. Carrier is the largest air conditioning producer in the world. It has U.S. manufacturing facilities in Indianapolis, IN for residential and commercial furnaces and air handlers, Collierville, TN for residential condensing units and heat pumps, Tyler, TX for residential package units and commercial condensing and package units, and Charlotte, NC for accessories and chillers. Carrier Corporation is also the manufacturer of Bryant, Payne, and Day & Night Heating and Cooling Systems, as well as additional brands through its sister company, International Comfort Products (ICP). Carrier's brand names include Weathermaker furnaces and air conditioners, Weathermaster commercial units, Centurion rooftop units, and Aquazone water- and ground-source heat pumps.

Carrier also owns Tyler (commercial food refrigeration and retailing/display products) and Transicold ("reefer" transport refrigeration). In early 2008, Carrier acquired Environmental Market Solutions, Inc. (EMSI), an environmental and green building consulting company based in the United States.

Carrier Corporation is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut and was acquired by United Technologies Corporation in July 1979. Prior to the acquisition by UTC, Carrier Corporation was known as the Carrier Air Conditioning Company.

Other Information

Carrier is a roughly $13.5 billion-a-year manufacturing company. In order to remain competitive, it aggressively seeks competitive labor costs.

The Carrier Corporation historically has been based in Syracuse, where Willis Carrier moved his facilities from New Jersey in the 1930s. During the late 20th century, when it was acquired by UTC, it was Central New York State's largest manufacturer. In recent years, Carrier has substantially downsized its presence in Syracuse, with manufacturing work being moved to a variety of domestic and international locations. Meanwhile, managerial employees were relocated closer to UTC's Connecticut corporate headquarters. This has been a challenge for the Syracuse regional economy.

Carrier purchased the naming rights to the Carrier Dome, the football and basketball arena at Syracuse University. Ironically, despite being named for an air conditioner manufacturer, the Carrier Dome is "not" air conditioned.

Carrier has numerous air conditioner models that are certified by Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM).
