The Magic Tree House series is an award-winning series of children's books written by American author Mary Pope Osborne.

In the first series, consisting of the first 28 books, Morgan le Fay sends Jack and Annie, two normal children from Frog Creek, Pennsylvania, on numerous adventures and missions with a magical tree house in order to help free Morgan from a spell, solve four ancient riddles to become Master Librarians, and save four ancient stories from being lost forever. After the twenty-eighth chapter book, Mary Pope Osborne started a second series called the Magic Tree House "Merlin Missions". In these missions, Jack and Annie have quests from the ancient wizard Merlin the Magician. These books are longer than the previous 28, and some take place in fantasy realms like Camelot.

All together, there are 48 fiction books named. Their titles are listed below. In addition, a number of Magic Tree House Research Guides (nonfiction companions to the series) have been written by the author, her husband Will and her sister Natalie Pope Boyce.[1] These books contain more information about the historical places and events which Jack and Annie visit in the Magic Tree House Series. Right now, twenty one have been released. One more is listed as a future book, so a total of twenty-two are named.

The series is translated into Japanese up to Book #39, and sold over 2 million copies as of March 2008.[citation needed] The Japanese version has anime-like illustrations.

A musical was written by Randy Courts and Will Osborne (Mary's husband). It toured to 55 cities in the 2008-2009 season and is scheduled to tour again in fall 2011.

An animated film from Media Factory is currently in the works in Japan for a 2012 theatrical release.[2]

Magic Tree House Merlin Missions

# Title Published Arc Plot Summary/Notes
29 Christmas in Camelot October 10, 2001 Quest to Save Camelot #1 Jack and Annie go on a quest to save Camelot, a quest that will prove to a beleaguered King Arthur that children and imagination really can make a difference. Eventually Jack and Annie break the spell over Camelot and meet the Knights of the Round Table most notably Sir Lancelot. This is also the first story where Merlin the Magician sends Jack and Annie on an adventure instead of Morgan, having learned of their abilities from Morgan Le Fay. (Note: This is the 25th book chronologically, due to the main storyline built upon the end of "Earthquake in the Early Morning".
30 Haunted Castle on Hallow's Eve 2003 Quest to Save Camelot #2 Jack, Annie, and Teddy must restore order to a duke's castle, on the outer realm of Camelot, for Merlin. Jack and Annie reunite with Teddy from the Enchanted Dog arc who becomes a recurring character in the rest of the books. It is also the first book where Jack and Annie perform their own magic. Jack and Annie are able to use the power of a magic hazel twig to transform themselves back to humans from ravens and Jack is able to tap into its power to defeat the Evil Raven King by turning him into a baby raven. This new ability of theirs is likely foreshadowing of later books when they start to make magic of their own.
