World Mayor

World Mayor is an award organized by City Mayors since 2004. It intends to raise the profile of mayors worldwide, as well as honour those who have served their communities well and who have contributed to the well-being of cities, nationally and internationally. The organizers make it plain that the award has no connection with any city or organization and is run on strictly non-commercial lines.

The choice of the winners is based on the number of votes mayors receive via the website and the quality and passion of comments, which support their candidacies.

The list of 10 finalists for the 2008 World Mayor Award has now been published [http://www.worldmayor.com/contest_2008/world-mayor-vote.html] , with a decision on the winners due in October 2008.

2008

The list of finalists for the 2008 World Mayor award was announced in January 2008. This included Helen Zille, Mayor of Cape Town, South Africa; Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles, USA; Paco Moncayo, Mayor of Quito, Ecuador; Leopoldo Lopez, Mayor of Chacao, Venezuela; Marides Fernando, Mayor of Marikina, Philippines, Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris, France, and Sheila Dikshit, CM of Delhi, India.

In July it was announced that the final 11 were (in alphabetical order of cities):

The winner and runner-up will be announced in October 2008.

2006

In June 2006 the shortlist of 50 finalists was announced, including Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen, Melbourne Lord Mayor John So, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara.

In December the accolade went to John So of Melbourne, with Amsterdam's Job Cohen in second place.

The nominees in 2005 included Michael Häupl of Vienna, Álvaro Arzú of Guatemala City, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Tehran, Ken Livingstone of London, Hazel McCallion of Mississauga, Ontario, and Cesar Maia of Rio de Janeiro and the award was taken by Dora Bakoyannis of Athens.
