July 11 ,1930 ) is an Americanauthor who has written several books onJapan andAsia .He was born to a
Jewish family in 1930 inDelaware ,Ohio . He studied atOhio Wesleyan University andHarvard University and received his Ph.D. in 1958 . He taught between 1967 and 2000 at Harvard.His book "Japan as Number One" is the all-time bestseller held by Western authors in Japan.Fact|date=June 2007
