Hattfjelldal ( _sm. Aarborte and _sm. Arbordi) is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway. Hattfjelldal was one of four municipalities in Norway involved in the Terra Securities scandal.

Hattfjelldal was separated from Vefsn in 1862.

The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Hattfjelldalen ("Hatfieldalen" 1723), since the first church was built there (in 1790). The first element is the name of the mountain Hattfjellet, the last element is "dal" m 'valley, dale'. The meaning of the name "Hattfjellet" is 'the hat mountain' (because its shaped like a hat).

Geography

The lake Røssvatnet ( _sm. Reevhtse) is a lake and reservoir lying partially in Hattfjelldal; it has been the site of human occupation since the Stone Age. Its area of 219 km² makes it the second largest lake in Norway by surface area. Børgefjell National Park is partly located in the southern part of Hattfjelldal, as is Jetnamsklumpen, a prominent mountain.
