Fræna is a municipality in the county of Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

The municipality was separated from Aukra 1840. The municipalities of Bud and Hustad was merged with Fræna January 1, 1964.

The main village and administrative centre in Fræna is Elnesvågen with 2,133 inhabitants as of January 1, 2007. The Moxy factory is located in Elnesvågen.

Other villages are Bud (712 inh.), Malme/Malmefjorden (404), Tornes (388) and Sylte (225). The area is nice for hiking, and nice targets are Heiane and Gjendemsfjellet.

The name

The municipality is named after Frænfjorden (Old Norse "Fræni"). The meaning of the name is unknown (it might be derived from "frænn" 'bright, shiny').

Until 1918 the name was written "Frænen". (And before 1865 the parish and municipality was named "Vaagø".)
