Krødsherad is a municipality in the county of Buskerud, Norway.

Krødsherad was separated from Sigdal January 1, 1901.

Geography

The district lies on the Krøderfjord in Hallingdal, and borders on the municipalities of Ringerike, Flå, Sigdal and Modum.

The civic centre, Noresund, is situated on the east side of lake Krøderen. In the south end of the same lake lies the other centre in Krødsherad; Krøderen. The Norefjell alpine skiing resort located in Krødsherad was host to the downhill and giant slalom competitions of the 1952 Olympic Winter Games.

The name

The Norse form of the name was "Krœðisherað". The first element is the genitive case of the name of the lake Krøderen, the last element is "herað" n 'district'. (See also the names Kvinnherad and Sauherad.) The meaning of the name "Krœðir" is unknown.

Until 1918 the name was written "Krødsherred".

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1981). It shows a saltire. (In older times the first element in the name "Krødsherad" was commonly misunderstood as the word "kross" 'cross'.)

Economy

The municipality lies only 10 old Norwegian miles [>The old Norwegian mile is 11.295 km.] from Oslo. With the shoreline at Krøderen and the high mountains at Norefjell, the municipality enjoys a spectrum of natural environments from lake to mountain. As a result there are many vacation homes in the municipality and tourism is an important contribution element in the Krødsherad economy.
