Nizhny Kuranakh

Nizhny Kuranakh (Russian: Нижний Куранах) is an urban-type settlement in the Sakha Republic, Russia. In 2007, the town had a population of 6592.

History

The town was first settled in the 1920s, when gold was discovered and mining activities began. It received urban-type settlement status in 1950.[1] The town has two smaller satellite settlements, Verkhny Kuranakh and Yakokit.

Infrastructure

The town is located on the Amur Yakutsk Mainline, between the larger towns of Aldan and Tommot. Employment is centred mainly on the open-cut gold mine near the town. Mining company Aldanzoloto maintains its head offices in the settlement and employs around 80% of the town's workforce.[2]
