The New York Photo Festival was founded in January 2007 by Frank Evers (NYPH) and Daniel Power in an effort to establish a world-class photo festival in the United States dedicated to the "Future of Contemporary Photography". Unlike other festivals which focus more on established masters of photography or previously produced works, the New York Photo Festival is focused on providing a platform for discovering contemporary photography through an intellectual presentation of ideas and previously unseen work.

The New York Photo Festival takes place every year in mid-May over a period of 4 days and is located in DUMBO, a thriving new residential district in Brooklyn. The inaugural event took place on May 14-18th, 2008 and attracted 15,000 visitors. In early 2007, Evers and Power partnered with the Walentas Family, well known cultural philanthropists and owners of the Two Trees Management, who provided 80,000 square feet (7,400 m2) of exhibition space to the festival.

NYPH'10

The third New York Photo Festival was scheduled to take place in DUMBO and Manhattan from May 12 to the 16th, 2010. NYPH'10 Festival Curators are Lou Reed, Erik Kessels, Vince Aletti, and Fred Ritchin. NYPH'10 will feature major exhibitions of contemporary photography, daytime and nighttime programs (including lectures and panels discussions) and evening celebrations.

NYPH'09

The second New York Photo Festival 2009 took place on May 13–17, 2009 and was curated by Jon Levy (publisher of Foto 8), William Ewing (Director, Musée de l'Elysée), Jody Quon (Director of Photography, New York Magazine) and Chris Boot (publisher, Chris Boot LTD).

William Ewing's NYPH'09 exhibition is called "All over the place!", and features the work of historical figures Ernst Haas, Jacob Holdt, Edward Steichen, and contemporary photographers Manolis Baboussis, Matthieu Gafsou, Oliver Godow, Tiina Itkonen, Anna Lehmann-Brauns, Juraj Lipscher, Virginie Otth, Philipp Schaerer, Joni Sternbach, Robert Walker, and Patrick Weidmann.

Jon Levy's NYPH'09 exhibition is called "Home For Good", and features the work of Lorraine Gruppe, Tim Hetherington, Simon Roberts, Chris Killip, Venetia Dearden, Seba Kurtis, Louie Palu, and David Gray.

Chris Boot's NYPH'09 exhibition includes the work of Stefan Ruiz, called "San Francisco Berlin". Chris is also presenting a series of one-hour public presentations entitled "Gay Men Play".

Jody Quon's NYPH'09 exhibition, "I am not sure I know what kind of girl I am", features the work of Edith Maybin, Valérie Belin, Rene & Radka, Grant Worth, Mondongo, Hank Willis Thomas, Katy Grannan, Sam Samore, Carlos Ranc, and David Sherry.

NYPH'08

In its inaugural year (2008), the festival founders invited well-known figures from the world of photography to curate four major exhibitions. The first New York Photo Festival Curators were Kathy Ryan (Director of Photography of the New York Times), Martin Parr (photographer), Leslie A. Martin (Publisher, Aperture Foundation), and Tim Barber (photographer, publisher of tinyvices.com).

The four major exhibitions of the New York Photo Festival 2008 (NYPH'08) were CHISEL by Kathy Ryan, NEW TYPOLOGIES by Martin Parr, THE UBIQUITOUS IMAGE by Leslie A. Martin, and VARIOUS PHOTOGRAPHS by Tim Barber.
