New Girl is an American television sitcom that premiered on Fox on September 20, 2011.[2]

On September 28, 2011, after two episodes aired, Fox ordered an additional 11 episodes to the initial 13-episode order, bringing the first season to 24 episodes.[3]

Contents

Plot

The series stars Zooey Deschanel as Jessica "Jess" Day, a well-liked, bubbly woman in her late 20s who is trying to get over her breakup with her boyfriend after he cheats on her. She eventually finds a new place to stay when she moves in with three guys: Nick, a bartender; Schmidt, a professional and modern-day Casanova; and Winston, a former basketball player. Rounding out this unlikely bunch is Jessica's street-smart model friend Cece.[4]

Cast and characters

Main cast

  • Zooey Deschanel as Jessica "Jess" Day, the eponymous "new girl." She is a teacher in her late 20s who moves in with three guys in an apartment she found on Craigslist after a messy break-up with her boyfriend.
  • Jake Johnson as Nick Miller, one of Jess's new roommates.[5] Nick is a bartender who has also gone through a slightly-less-recent break up. He is revealed to be thirty and originally from Chicago. He dropped out three semesters shy of his law degree.
  • Max Greenfield as Schmidt, one of Jess's new roommates. Schmidt is the stereotypical ladies man and so-called "douche bag" of the group.
  • Lamorne Morris as Winston Bishop, one of Jess's new roommates and the original "missing" roommate that left room for Jess to move in. Winston returns from playing basketball in Latvia in the second episode.
  • Hannah Simone as Cece Meyers, Jess' childhood best friend and a model.

The character of Coach, played by Damon Wayans Jr., appeared in the pilot only. He, Nick, Schmidt and Winston were the original four roommates in the apartment. In the second episode, Winston returns to the apartment and Coach leaves.

Production

The series was created, produced and written by Elizabeth Meriwether for Chermin Entertainment and Fox Television Studios.[6]

Coach's departure in the second episode is due to Wayans' continuing role in the ABC sitcom Happy Endings after it was presumed to be canceled.[7][8]

Reception

In June 2011, New Girl was one of eight honorees in the "most exciting new series" category at the 1st Critics' Choice Television Awards, voted by journalists who had seen the pilots.[9] Review aggregate website Metacritic gave it a score of 66/100 based on "generally favorable reviews".[10]

Ratings

The pilot episode drew 10.28 million viewers, a 4.8 Adults 18-49 demo rating.[11] This was the highest-rated Fall debut for a Fox scripted show since The Bernie Mac Show in 2001.[12]

Release

Online

The pilot was first released on such online services as Hulu Plus,[13] TiVo, and iTunes before the September 20 premiere on Fox.

Others

It was possible to watch the pilot before its release in the in-flight TV services of Frontier Airlines and JetBlue.
