Neopaganism in Hungary

Neopaganism (Újpogányság) in Hungary has some New Age and Wiccan adherents, besides a special ethnic Hungarian branch inspired by Hungarian mythology and folklore.

Szilárdi (2006) describes the movement as a postmodern combination of ethnocentric linguistic, national, religious and occasional political patterns of identity.

Interest in reviving the Hungarian pagan past began in 1984 with the tremendous success of the rock opera István, a király (Rabinovitch and Lewis 2004, p. 183).

Magyar Boszorkányszövetség "Hungarian Witchcraft" is a Budapest-based Neopagan organization formed in 1986. Kelta-Wicca Hagyományőrzők Egyháza is a Celtic Wicca group, also based in Budapest. Ősmagyar Táltos Egyház "Paleo-Hungarian Táltos Church" is a Neo-Shamanistic organization based in Nyíregyháza.
