Neil Trevor Kaplan

Neil Trevor Kaplan, QC (1984), JP (1984), CBE (2001), SBS (2007) is an international arbitrator. From 1990 until 2004, he was Chairman of Hong Kong's International Arbitration Centre.

Education

Born in 1942, Kaplan attended St Paul's School, London (1956–1961) and King's College London (1961–1964) earning his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1964. In 1965 he was called to the Bar of England and Wales. He practised at the London Bar from Chambers until 1980.

In 1980 he was appointed Deputy Principal Crown Counsel, Attorney General's Chambers in Hong Kong with special responsibility for civil litigation, remaining until 1982 when he took silk as Queen's Counsel for Hong Kong and became Principal Crown Counsel (Deputy Law Officer on Civil Side/Acting Solicitor).

In 1983 he returned to private practice at Des Voeux Chambers in Hong Kong. In 1983 he also was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the State of Victoria, Australia. From 1984-87, and 1988–89, Kaplan was Chairman of the Hong Kong Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. In 1986 he was admitted to the New York Bar.^{[citation needed]}

From 1990–94 he served as a High Court Judge in Hong Kong, and later served as the Overseas Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. In 1995 Kaplan was named a member of the Council of the International Council of Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). From 1999-2004 he chaired the WTO Review Panel for Hong Kong.^{[citation needed]}
