Guelph railway station

Guelph railway station

Guelph station is a railway station in Guelph, Ontario. It is served by six VIA Rail trains daily (three in each direction) running between Sarnia and Toronto.

History

Built in 1911, the station is a classic example of early 20th Century Canadian railway station design and has been designated as a heritage structure per the "Railway Station Protection Act". Parking is free, and the station is staffed and wheelchair-accessible.

In the past, Guelph was in the also served by GO Transit trains (starting in 1990 as the terminus of the Georgetown line), but provincial cutbacks in 1993 led GO to pull back the railway service to Georgetown. In the fall of 2007, GO Transit announced it was starting an environmental assessment on track upgrades required to resume rail service to Guelph.cite news|publisher="Guelph Mercury"|title=Landing on a commuter train solution|url=http://news.guelphmercury.com/article/284174|accessdate=2008-03-18|date=2008-01-19|last=Graham|first=David]

GO still serves Guelph with buses, which depart from the adjacent Guelph Bus Terminal and sometimes from the University of Guelph, and then interchange with trains at Georgetown.

The City of Guelph is planning on building an Inter-Regional Transit hub beside the current train station and along Carden Street to where the current bus station sits. The current bus station will be torn down.Fact|date=March 2008
