MANAGE was established in 1987, as the National Centre for Management of Agricultural Extension at Hyderabad, by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India as an autonomous institute, from which its acronym MANAGE is derived. In recognition of its importance and expansion of activities all over the country, its status was elevated to that of a National Institute in 1992 and re-christened with its present name i.e., National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management. With rapid globalization and new advancements in technology, the Indian agri-business sector is faced with an unprecedented demand for competent, professional managers capable of handling a whole gamut of operations from farming to procurement, supply chain and retailing. The PGDM-ABM at National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) was launched to meet the above challenges. MANAGE is the Indian response to challenges of agricultural extension in a rapidly growing and diverse agricultural sector. The policies of liberalization and globalization of the economy and the level of agricultural technology becoming more sophisticated and complex, called for major initiatives towards re-orientation and modernization of the agricultural extension system. Effective ways of managing the extension system needed to be evolved and extension organization enabled to transform the existing set up through professional guidance and training of critical manpower. MANAGE is the response to this imperative need.

Selection Process

PEDAGOGY

With little focus on development of managerial skills, in the undergraduate curriculum, our young agricultural graduates find it difficult to function effectively as managers in Agri-Business firms, which have emerged as their most important employers. Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Agri-Business Management) is MANAGE’s response to this situation. The programme aims at enabling, meritorious agricultural graduates acquire the critical competencies to function as effective Agri-Business managers. The excellent response from leading Indian and multinational Agri-Business companies in placement of students as management trainees, and their interest in assigning summer projects to them, fully validates the launching of the programme. The programme, launched in 1996, is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education. On completion of the programme, successful candidates are awarded the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (Agri-Business Management).

UNIQUE FEATURES

Learning Events: Classroom inputs facilitate the development of theoretical concepts, knowledge, skills and managerial capabilities. To enrich the learning process, the other academic activities and events, such as short-term projects, assignments, interaction with noted experts and Agri-Business executives, on subjects of relevance to the students are organized. Other events like, debates and elocution contests, management games, corporate and industrial visits are also organized.

Live Projects: Live projects allow a student to gain corporate exposure. Students are shortlisted for various projects depending on their areas of interest. Cargill India Pvt. Ltd., Advanta India Ltd., ITC and Bayer Crop Sciences are some of the many companies that take in students for short term projects.

Summer Internship: The Summer Training at MANAGE, is an eight to ten week process over the 4th Trimester. It is the initial interface of the students and the Corporates. The exposure gained by students aids them in making decisive career choices. Many companies also view the process as a form of pre-recruitment, and hence award several students a Pre-Placement Offer.

Village Visit Programme: In the Village Visit Programme the students stay in villages with farmers for a fortnight. This programme provides the students, an opportunity to understand the potential areas for development in agriculture, as well as the constraints faced by the farmers. At the end of the study visit, a report is prepared on the status of agri- economy of the village, analysis of the constraints in agriculture and allied sectors, identifying opportunities for growth and formulating developmental strategies for the particular village.
