2005 Java-Bali Blackout

2005 Java-Bali Blackout

The 2005 Java-Bali Blackout refers to a massive power outage on Java — the main island of Indonesia in which the capital Jakarta is located — and Bali on August 18 2005. It affected some 100 million people, making it the largest blackout in history.

Immediate impact

Power went off at around 10:23 (UTC+7) on August 18 2005 in most areas of the two islands.

Cause

PLN, the state-owned electricity company, confirmed that the electricity grid failed at several points throughout Java and the neighbouring island of Bali, causing a supply shortfall of 2,700 MWh, roughly half of the original supply.

Effects

Due to the sudden supply shortfall, power went out in most areas of Java, including all parts of the capital and largest city in Indonesia, Jakarta. Other major cities in Indonesia also on Java, such as Surabaya, were also affected.

Almost 30 million people were affected by the outage, making the outage the most widespread in terms of population affected in history.

Restoration of service

Power resumed in most areas of Jakarta at about 17:00 (UTC+7) on the same day.

Post-blackout

PLN apologised for the incident and said about 293,235 customers will be compensated. Meanwhile, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered police and the national intelligence agency to assist PLN in tracing the cause of the blackouts.
