History of the House

440 acres of land were originally purchased by Ichabod Benton Miller on April 2, 1796 and construction of the house was started soon after. Ichabod purchased the land from Captain Matthew Jouitt, a Virginia officer who was granted 600 acres of land for his services in the Revolutionary War. Ichabod purchased the land for $.50 an acre: a total of $220. When the house was built, it was built like any house of that time period. The house's front window is original. People lived in the house for 170 years after the Millers left. The last owners of the house was Lawrence and Emma Leuser. They owned the house from 1910-1969. The brick house next to the Miller-Leuser house was owned by Lawerence and Emma's daughters. While the daughters lived in the new house, equiped with all the new tools of the era, Mr. Leuser still lived in the log cabin in order to rock in his rocker. ATHS bought the house in 1971, and now the house resides on less than an acre.
