The name Merigomish comes from the Mi'makq Indian meaning "A place of merrymaking". The first white settler was Barney MacGee. The village's most promiment citizen is the Canadian tenor Ron Murdock (1941) son of Russell and Kaye (Katherine Elizabeth Bonney) Murdock.
Educated first at Merigomish elementary school, Ron Murdock attended Junior/Senior high at East Pictou Rural High where music teacher Eleanor Sutherland spotted his unusual musical talent. It was she who persuaded New Glasgow music educator Vivian Brand to accept him as a private pupil.
In 1958 he entered Mount Allison University, graduating in 1962 with a B.A. and an Associateship in Music.
Four years of private voice study in Montreal with Canada's top voice teacher, Bernard Diamant paved the way for Murdock to trvavel to Lugano, Switzerland where he completed his vocal development with Professor Frederick Husler and Yvonne Rodd-Marling.
In 1969 he moved to London, England where he rapidly became one of the outstanding singers of his generation.
He is married to British dancer Nadia Kevan, has two children (Andrew, born 1976 and Esther born 1996).
Ron Murdock now lives in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
