The Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, popularly known as NIT-Jalandhar (NITJ), is a autonomous university in northern India. The Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar is one of the youngest of the 20 National Institutes of Technology of India. It was founded as a joint venture between the governments of Punjab and India, originally under the name Punjab Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar (PREC).

The institution was established in 1987 as Regional Engineering College and on 17 October 2002, was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, in a bid to provide increased autonomy in decision-making.

NITJ is a leading premier centre of excellence in engineering and technology to produce technical manpower for India. The institute offers BTech programs in nine disciplines of engineering and technology along with research programs leading to MSc, MTech and PhD. The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from Punjab and the rest from other states/union territories of the country.

Housing

The students of National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar are drawn from all parts of the country. At present there are 7 male hostels and 2 female hostels and a mega hostel that have a capacity to accommodate around 2,000 male and 300 female students respectively.A mega hostel for boys having capacity of 1600 student is under construction .The residential accommodation in hostels comprises cubicles and dormitories which have four-seater, two-seater and one-seater facility allotted on the basis of the year and course of study the student is pursuing.

Departments

The following departments are present in the institute. All departments offer courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and are actively involved in research in their specific fields.

Fests on campus

TechNITi: TechNITi A techno-management fest that is conducted during the odd semester in mid-September. Participants from all over the country converge for this three-day event, which is usually the highlight of student life on campus. The fest involves events from all the departments, including from robotics, workshops, guest lectures and informals.

TechNITi 09 took place from 18–20 September and was a great success. The guest lectures included video conferencing with Sam Pitroda "The Father of Indian Telecom" and other prominent personalities. The fest saw good participation from almost 100 institutes from all over India.

Utkansh: A cultural fest that is conducted during the even semester, which aims at drawing out the creative side of the techies on campus. The event is usually a four-day affair that occurs during the end of March. Each day usually has theme-based events; previous themes have included folk, rock , Kavi Sammelan (poets meet), comedy, theater, fusion etc. Utkansh 10 was scheduled for 18–21 March 2010.

Student activities

Students take part in many extra- and co-curricular activities to take the stress away from their hectic schedules. Most students are members of societies, which organize events to keep the campus entertained. Some events of note organized by societies outside fests include NITJ Idol (the hunt for the singing heartthrob of the college) and JAM Eve (when participants outwit each other in under a minute).

The active societies include the:

1. The Music and Dramatics Society (MADS) brings together the music and drama buffs of the college. The society holds the prime responsibility of hosting UTKANSH (the annual cultural fest of the college) as well as BHARAT DHWANI or NIT Day which is celebrated to commemorate national unity as well as the day in which the college was upgraded to NIT status from its erstwhile REC tag.

2. The Literary and Debating Society (LADS) organises events including quizzes, mock parliaments, devil's advocate, as well as writing competitions. The society holds the prime responsibility for the publication of the institute newsletter, CAPSLOCK, which highlights issues relating to the entire fraternity on campus.

3. The Fine Arts Society is the society for the creative and gifted in arts. It organizes events in painting, pottery and best out of waste, to name a few.

4. The Photography Society is the society for the avid shutterbug. They hold photo contests whose themes have included shadow photography, fashion photography and landscapes of campus.

5. The Movie Club organises movie screenings as well as movie making contests known as IMAGINEERS.

6. Hindi Samiti is the society for promotion of the national language. Apart from organizing language-specific writing and speaking contests, it aims to increase the use of the national language in the technical sphere.

7.. Eco Club is for raising environmental awareness in the campus. The club is trying to start an initiative where the campus can be rid of its dependence on plastics.

8. Yoga Club is for promotion of yoga amongst students.

9. PRAYAS is a social welfare club of NITJ. In association with NGO 'GOONJ' it organises collection campaign, blood donation camps, social awareness drive, etc.

Admissions

The admissions to the BTech programs run by the institute are by the All India Engineering Entrance Examination AIEEE.Total seats for B.Tech is 786 for 2011 admissions. The admissions to the MTech programs are by the GATE exam conducted by the IITs and IISc. Thee postgraduate admission is on the basis of previous research and interviews by the appropriate screening committees.

To promote academic and cultural activities within the department as well as raise awareness about best practices related to the academic domain, each department has a dedicated society:

  • Professional Association of Computer Engineers (PACE)
  • Society of Electronics and Communication Engineers (SOECE)
  • Society of Progressive Instrumentation and Control Engineers (SPICE)
  • The Industrial Engineers Society (TIES)
  • Society of Mechanical Engineers (SOME)
  • Textile Engineers Society
  • Society of Bio-Tech Engineers and Researchers (SOBER)

National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar was ranked at 38th position overall in a list of the top engineering colleges in India in a survey conducted by the business paper Mint in association with C-Fore in 2008. It is one of the eminent colleges of the country for higher education in science and technology and has consistently been in the top tier of engineering colleges in general and NITs in particular.[1][1]. 65

The institute is regularly visited by Indian and foreign MNCs for offering jobs to final year students of B.Tech and M.Tech.[2] The ratio of number of students placed to total number of students is nearly 1:1, with a number of students grabbing multiple job offers.
