Early Life

Dexter Strickland was born on October 1, 1990 in Rahway, New Jersey. He attended the St. Patrick schooling system, all the way through his senior year of high school. Strickland was a standout guard in high school, where he led them to three consecutive state tournament championships. Strickland scored a career high of 20 points in one of the championship games. At the end of his senior year, he was asked by the McDonald's All-American Game committee to play in the All-American game[2]. During the previous year he played in the 2008 Elite 24 All-Star game of Harlem. He finished as the #4 Prep Player in the US via USA Today's National Rankings. He was also admitted to the first team of All-American Honors players. At the end of his senior year he signed a contract to play for North Carolina.[3]

Freshman Year

Strickland adapted to NCAA basketball very quickly. He averaged 17.4 minutes a game playing alternately as a point guard and shooting guard. He also started four games. He had many great games but some of his most celebrated were during the NIT Tournament where he put up 7 points and assisted twice against the University of William and Mary. The next game, against Rhode Island, he scored 7 points and had three assists. He also excelled against Mississippi State where he scored 8 points and didn't turn the ball over once. He had a career high of 17 points in the Heels' game against Clemson and finished third on his team with thirty-three(33).[4]

Sophomore Year

Strickland was a starting guard during the 2010/11 season, also acquiring a new number - #1 instead of #5 from his freshman year. He averaged 7.5 points per game, shooting 25% from 3 point range and 45.6% from the deuce. He averaged 3.1 rebounds per game. He also set a new career high with 19 points in a game against William and Mary, surpassing his previous career-high of 14 points. His contributions helped North Carolina advanced to the elite 8 of the NCAA tournament.[5]
