The German National Library of Economics (ZBW) (German: Deutsche Zentralbibliothek für Wirtschaftswissenschaften) in Kiel and Hamburg is the world’s largest specialist library for economics. It is part of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community.
It holds more than 4.16 million books and other publications and its database ECONIS includes more than 4.8 million titles. The ZBW is a WTO depositary library and maintains a European Documentation Centre at both locations, Kiel and Hamburg. Its total annual budget is 16.2 million euros.
History
The ZBW was established on the first of February 1919 as a department of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, whose name was the “Royal Institute for Maritime Traffic and World Economy” (German: Königliches Instituts für Seeverkehr und Weltwirtschaft) at this time. In 1966 the ZBW became the central library for economics in the Federal Republic of Germany by decision of the German Research Foundation (German: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).
