Deolinda

Deolinda is a Portuguese quartet band founded in 2006 when brothers Pedro da Silva Martins and Luis José Martins (formerly of the band 7-Headed Beast) invited their cousin, Ana Bacalhau, who was then singing with the band Lupanar, to sing four songs they had written. When they realized that her voice perfectly fit their songs they invited her to join them. They also invited José Pedro Leitão, the bass player with Lupanar and currently Ana Bacalhau's husband, to join them -- creating Deolinda.

The band's style is inspired by fado but differs substantially from that traditional Portuguese genre. For instance, Deolinda does not use Portuguese guitar as fado would dictate. Deolinda's songs and lyrics are not serious and fatalistic like classic fado: instead, they often use humor, irony and a fast, happy pace.

When performing live, members of Deolinda do not dress in black as traditional fado players do.

Their second album, "Dois Selos e Um Carimbo" (Two Stamps and a Seal), released in April 2010, hit the Portuguese charts at #1.

The song Parva que Sou premiered at four concerts in Lisbon and Porto in January 2011, even before it was released as a CD or video. The lyrics criticize modern Portugal as a place where young people earn university degrees but are unable to find meaningful employment. The song's catch line translates as "What a foolish world, where in order to be a slave, it's necessary to study". The title translates as "What a Fool I Am".

Parva que Sou gained immediate acclaim as an anthem of Portugal's economically dislocated young generation. Bootleg videos of the song's concert premier went viral on social networks[1] which can be heard at the band's official website [2].
