Cross-hatching (writing)

Cross-hatching (writing)
Cross-hatched letter of 1837, Confederate States of America.

Cross-hatching describes the use of the technique of turning a page 90 degrees when writing to fill another page of text in the same space. This was a widely used technique to save paper or to reduce postage taxes when writing in the 19th century.[1]

This is distinct from a Palimpsest as manuscripts were written this way at one sitting or for the same purpose (such as a diary), rather than being re-used.
