New Zealand has a low level of corruption and has been consistently ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the Corruption Perception Index. However, about four percent of New Zealanders have admitted to paying a bribe.[1]
The Serious Fraud Office which was set up in 1990 to investigate complex cases of fraud including bribery and corruption.[2] New Zealand ratified the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention in 2001.[3] The New Zealand Police force is generally seen to be fairly free of corruption.
Notable cases
A case labelled as corruption involved Taito Phillip Field, a former Member of Parliament. He was sentenced to six years jail for 11 counts of bribery and corruption.[1]
