Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology (GCECT), formerly known as College of Ceramic Technology (CCT), is a government funded college affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology in Kolkata, India. It offers engineering courses in Ceramic Technology, Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology.

Administration

The college is under the Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of W.B., which takes an active part in overall policy matters and certain financial sanctions. The college has recently gained autonomy to deal with many financial matters and the overall management is guided by a ‘Governing Body’ consisting of very eminent people from the industry and the Government, which is headed by a renowned industrialist Shri. S. K. Ghosh who is also an ex-student of this college.

History

This is the oldest Ceramic College in India and one of the few colleges that has got the opportunity to be headed by people who have got international recognition.[citation needed]

It was established in the Year 1941, by Professor Sasadhar Ray, a student of eminent physicists, Satyendra Nath Bose and Kariamanickam Srinivasa Krishnan.

Admissions

Admission is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) conducted by the West Bengal Joint Examination Admissions Board (WBJEEB).

Lateral admissions are through the Joint Entrance Examination of Lateral Entry (JELET), also conducted by WBJEEB.

Academics

GCECT offers four year under-graduate degree courses in the following three disciplines:

  • B.Tech in Ceramic Technology
  • B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
  • B.Tech in Information Technology

It also provides post-graduate courses:

  • M.Tech in Ceramic Technology

  • The Ceramic Technology and Information Technology streams are National Board of Accreditation Accredited.[1]
  • The college is an IBM Software Centre of Excellence[2]
  • Joint Research Project with IIT-Kharagpur- Dev of Jute Reinforced Concrete[3]
  • Joint Industrial Project with TISCO- Comparative study of wear mechanism of MgO –Carbon, Al2O3-MgO-Carbon and Pitch bonded Dolomite Refractories in Steel Ladle Working Environment
  • Technical tie-up with foreign Universities Like Pennstate University, University of Florida and Western Michigan University

Student Life

The students union is an association of the students that acts as a focal point of the activities of the students. The Union is affiliated to the Students Federation of India. Elections are held to decide the office bearers of the group.

The college provides hostel facilities to male students with limited accommodation. The hostel is located just opposite the college campus.

There is a field in front of the main college building where the students play football and cricket.
