Chio Min Secondary School (居林觉民国民型中学) (Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chio Min) is a government Chinese school which is located at Kulim, Kedah, Malaysia.[2]

Background

Chio Min Secondary School was established in 1957, which extended from Chio Min Primary School, established on 10 May 1918.
In 1942, the Chio Min School had to be closed due to the Japanese invasion. Chio Min school reopened in 1945.
In 1948, the number of students increased to 600 people and there are 100 students studying at night. Night class closed in 1963.
In 1957, two new buildings constructed and Chio Min Secondary School started.
In 1958, the Primary School into Chio Min Chio Min Primary School A and School B.
In 1964, the government issued a total of RM40,000 to build nine new classrooms. Prior to that, in South Kedah there were no Chinese secondary schools for Chinese primary school students to further their studies. Therefore, some people set up a committee to collect donations from the public to build a new building with 30 classrooms. At that time, the school is located in the Klang Sago, Kulim, Kedah.
In 1985, the new building, Chio Min Secondary School was established to overcome the lack of classrooms.
Two blocks of the new building was established in 1990 and was adopted in 1993.
In 1997, a computer lab equipped with 7 computers and 3 printers had been established. With such sophisticated equipment, the school has been able to integrate the management of a computer class.
In 2000 a new toilet block for use by students and teachers has been established. This is the result of donations from the public and the entire school community.
In August 2001, Chio Min Secondary School received 1.5 million Ringgit in government funding to build a new four-storey school building which officially opened on 15 January 2002. With the feel of opening a new page in History, on March 25, the first batch of form 6 classes (university preparation class) started. It consisted of the arts stream and the science stream (two classes) to provides opportunities for the school's top Form Five students to further their studies.
On 21 January 2002, computer room has moved to new school building, the old computer room was converted into a comfortable air-conditioned conference room.
In addition, government funding again to construct a two-story EPU computer room, it cost about 500,000 ringgit and construction started on April 2002 until end of 2003.
In 9 February 2003, the Chinese Orchestra was established to shoulder the mission of the Chinese culture heritage; school principal, Mr. Lim has been labelled as "the father of Chinese Orchestra," nickname.
In 2004, furthering the development of the computer hardware, the whole school was equipped with more than 100 computers, including computers in conference rooms, library reference room, computer room and the Office of Academic Affairs, and all integrated with air conditioning and connection devices, the internet connection allow teachers and students enhance their communication, from which to obtain the latest, fastest, most, best and most practical information. In the same year, felt in the higher level, the four classes started to teach computer and information technology (IT) courses.
In year 2005, the first batch of 72 SPM IT candidates scored excellent results in the SPM.

Chio Min Secondary School has great success in public examinations such as Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR),[4] Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)[5] and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM).[6]

In 2009, under the leadership of the Principal Mr Tan Teik Seong and assisted by Cocurriculum Senior Assistant Mr Lau Chong Beng, the school Philharmonic Orchestra was formed. The the music developement in the school was further enhanced and the year 2011 saw the School Show Band joined hand with the Chinese Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra and the school Choir had their first ever Joint Concert. This is part of the school effort to promote music as the school's niche area.
