Introduction
The words जगत and गुरु are of Sanskrit origin where जगत् (Jagat) means the entire world and गुरु (Guru) means spiritual master. The Sanskrit poet Kālidāsa uses the word जगतगुरु for Shiva in his great poem (Mahākāvya) titled Kumārasambhava. In the Rāmacaritamānasa, the poet-saint Tulasidas uses the same word for Rāma. The word छत्र (Kshatra)- is again a Sanskrit word meaning Kingdom but which had a modern origin in term- छत्रजगत गुरु Kshatrajagat Guru as it was coined during early 20th century on outburst of Vedanta controversial at the time of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj in Princely state of Kolhapur in Maharashtra State, India.
Early life
Original name of Kshatrajagatguru Benadikar Patil was Sadashiv Benadikar-Patil. Born in Benadi village on Maharashtra-Karanatka Border. He was honoured this Kshatrajagatguru title by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur. In the history of Modern India he was first Kshatriya JagatGuru. He was a well known Sanskrit Pandit. He used to write literature and poems in Sanskrit. Shahu Maharaj send him to Kashi- A Holly place of Hindu People to learn Vedas and Sanskrit literature. Later he wrote article on Bhaujan Hindu philosophy which remained unnoticed in Modern History of Philosophy in India.
Important role of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj
Lokraja Shahu, who hailed from his Kolhapur Kingdom started Kshatrajagatguru peeth at Patgaon in Maharashtra and appointed Sadashiv Benadikar Patil from Benadi as a Kshatrajagatguru. Later Shahu Maharaj send him to Kashi for study and research of Vedas and spirituality to vigilant the history of Mouni Maharaj.[1]
The records of appointment of Benadikar Patil as a Kshatrajagatguru are seen in Private library of Prof. Dr. Jayashingrao Pawar who is a notable Historian from Maharashtra state. Also, records on Mouni Maharaj and Shivaji Maharaj meeting are found in these libraries.
Great Saint Mouni Maharaj—Guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Mouni Maharaj was a great saint during the time of Shivaji Maharaj in 16th Century in Deccan region at Patgaon. He used to handle the politics of Vijapur region under the regime of Adilshah. At the time of Karnataka visit Chhatrapati Shivaji met Mouni Maharaj in Patgaon where he took Diksha from him and went further for Dakshin Swari-a mission to conquer South India. Eventually he conquered that region and he gave a large credit to Mouni Maharaj.
Patgaon is a holy place in Bhudargad taluka of Kolhapur district in Maharashtra State, India. It is famous for Mouni Maharaj math and samadhi. At this place in year 1920, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur started a Kshatrajagatguru Peeth and appointed Benadikar Patil as first Kshatrajagatguru. This event stir the entire regious stature of Western India at that time. The controversy between Sanathan and Bhaujan communities widen and Movement like Satyashodak Samaj spread its roots deeply in India under Mahatma Phule, Shahu Maharaj, Babasaheb Ambedkar. Later during Pre and Post Independence era this Movement reshaped entire Sociology of India.
Contribution in education and social reforms
Kshatrajagatguru Benadikar Patil paved important contribution together with V. T. Patil, Balasaheb Desai and Gulabrao Patil in establishing Shri Mouni Vidyapeeth which was established in the year 1951 [2]. Also, he was a main inspirational to V. T. Patil for establishing Tararani Vidyapeeth in Kolhapur.[3]. His contribution was very important in Rural areas of Kolhapur which opened the doors of education for Bahujan Samaj.
