Seeing how deranged he has become, the rest of the gang try to break him out by enlisting the help of the other students in the playground, a plan that would not succeed until enlisting King Bob, who is convinced that T.J. should be freed and orders all of the children in the playground to contribute.

Gustav "Gus" Griswald, a new student in Third Street, arrives in school to no fanfare during a plan done by the gang. After giving him a brief tour around the school, King Bob declares Gus as the "new kid", having never met him before and being the newest student in the playground. From there, he becomes dejected by being called the "new kid" by everyone including his parents.

Spinelli is apprehensive about her parents attending Parent's Night because they embarrass her. 
4 (2b) "Swing on Through to the Other Side" January 17, 1998 (1998-01-17)
Spinelli creates a pseudo-religious philosophy after she comes to the belief that fourth grader Swinger Girl (aka Laura Jameson), 'went over the top' on the swing, passing into another 'higher state of being', making Spinelli's friends concerned. The name of the episode is a play on the title of the song Break on Through to the Other Side by The Doors

After Randall reveals that Spinelli's first name is Ashley, she is forced to join The Ashleys who humiliate her and make her work as their servant.

Miss Finster is attracted to Hank the janitor, and begins dating him as a result she starts being nice to everyone, concerning the children.

When King Bob comes down with tonsilitis, he appoints Gus as the new King Of The Playground. The power goes to Gus's head, and he starts ordering people about.

Vince is concerned about whether his "cool" big brother Chad really is a geek.

After being told Principal Prickly plans to move her to Oppenheimer after scoring exceptionally well on a test, Gretchen worries she might not see T.J. and the others again.

Speedy, the class hamster, dies, so the kids decide to throw a funeral, but it doesn't go as expected.

After a bizarre kidnapping incident, T.J. lives among the younger children for a while.

After getting tired of everyone disobeying playground rules, Miss Finster plans to put anyone who breaks playground rules into "The Box", starting with T.J. He goes crazy and is terrified of anything in a square, forcing the others to resort to drastic measures to help him get back to normal.

In a parody of a court trial, Spinelli and Randall battle it out in court after Randall accuses her of throwing a rock during a dirt-clod war. The episode is in the style of the film Roshomon, different points of view of the same event. The trial loosely parodies A Few Good Men

Intrigued by its secrecy, the kids try and find out what the teacher's lounge looks like, only to be astonished at what they find inside.

It's a rainy day and recess is canceled. When the rain won't seem to stop after day three, the kids start to get on each other's nerves. Will the kids survive five days of indoor recesses?

Mikey is the only one of his group who decides to collect cans for the annual Can Drive after the other kids drop out, not wanting to lose against the Ashleys again.

The gang hear a chilling story of what older students like to do with their time, and the only solution is for two of the six to disprove it in the world's most 'unusual' experiment: kissing.

Principal Prickly wants to tear down 'Ol Rusty, but not if T.J. and the whole school can help it.

NOTE: Strangely, Gus is only in this episode for a few seconds and he does not speak. He can be seen on 'Ol Rusty when all the kids climb on and refuse to get down.

When Principal Prickly discovers that Mikey sings like Robert Goulet (who portrays Mikey's singing voice), he appoints a beautiful, young music teacher Ms. Calamone. Mikey becomes attracted to her.

A researcher named Dr. Quilty wants to research by video about recess. When she first tries it, she fails, then T.J. and the gang decide to help her out. How will it turn out?

The main kids' "doubles" are Spinelli = Rigalli, Vince = Vance, Gretchen = Greta Grobler, Gus = Russ Rimphole, Mikey = Mickey, and T.J. = C.J. Rottweiller.

When Gus's father finds out that Cornchip Girl's father is his archenemy who worked for the Navy, Gus and Cornchip Girl aren't allowed to see each other anymore, but they decide to share a secret friendship that their fathers won't know about.

Gretchen and Galileo conduct a test to find out how tall everyone will be when they are older-- Vince will be 6'2, T.J will be 5'9, Spinelli will be 5'6, and Gus will be 6'4 and Galileo says that Mikey will be 50 feet, which causes Mikey to worry that he will be taller than he is now.

Lawson become jealous after T.J.'s gang is rewarded by King Bob when they prevented the superintendent's plans for a dress code. To make T.J.'s gang become useless, Lawson organizes his own gang. 20 minute special NOTE:Mr E [from the episode the Substitute] and Miss Salamoni [from the episode The Voice] make a cameo appearence in the audience during Randall and Kurst the Worst's Ballet Performance NOTE: Phil Gordy and Willie make a cameo as second/third graders during the scene before the second and third graders are about to go to war oddly though they are in 4th Grade as they are usually seen in the same class as T.J. and his friends NOTE:The Pale Kid's and Principal Prickly's Brother Paul Prickly also make a cameo appearence NOTE:Library Kid makes her second ever apperance in the show NOTE:Lawson breaks the fourth wall by pausing the screen during the Recess Opening theme at the begining of Part 2 of the episode

NOTE:Lawson and his crew take over the Recess Opening Theme with Randall replacing Gus in the scene where he blows the bubble gum that get's stuck all over his face and head and then the kick ball landing on his head getting stuck to him and with Greg Skeens replacing Vince in the scene where he kicks the ball up into the air

School's out at Third Street School, but T.J. is upset, because his friends have all decided to go to various camps to improve their skills. Matters get worse as T.J. find out that Philium Benedict, a former friend of Principal Prickly, is trying to use a tractor beam to move the moon closer to the earth which will result in a new Ice Age and end summer vacation for all schools in the world. It is now up to T.J. to gather up all of his friends and try to stop Benedict from ending summer vacation. T.J. makes a rude comment Prickly's "saggy butt".

  • Children of the Cornchip: Cornchip Girl (who's real name is Teresa LaMaze episode "The Army-Navy Game") tests some untested chips, and turns into a werewolf-like creature.
  • When Bikes Attack!: On a stormy day, Mikey's bike comes to life after being struck by lightning.
  • Night of the Living Finsters: Lawson dares Vince to spend the night beneath the Diggers' hole.
  • This episode is similar to the episode Treehouse of Horror from The Simpsons.
