China Media Project was established by Journalism & Media Studies Centre of The University of Hong Kong in 2003, to generate systematic, multi-facted research in the field of Chinese journalism.Faculty staffs and international advisors of Journalism & Media Studies Centre have extensive contact with mainland Chinese media.Working directly with editors, writers and producers from various media in China, the project documents and analyzes the process of media reform in China and the formal and informal factors that influence it.

The China Media Project team is led by veteran journalists Ying Chan and Qian Gang. The project also benefits from the participation and expertise of the faculty of the Journalism & Media Studies Centre.

Ying Chan (陈婉莹)

Ying Chan, an award-winning journalist and Hong Kong native, established the Journalism and Media Studies Centre in July 1999. She set up the Master of Journalism programme, launched Hong Kong’s first fellowships for working journalists, and forged extensive ties between HKU and the news industry.

Qian Gang (钱钢)

Best known for his tenure as managing editor of Southern Weekend, one of China’s most progressive newspapers, Qian Gang is one of China’s foremost journalists. Qian was also a co-creator and executive editor of “News Probe,” CCTV’s pioneering weekly investigative news program with nearly 20 million viewers.

David Bandurski (班志远)

David Bandurski is responsible for editing the China Media Project’s English-language book series and managing the CMP project website. His writings have appeared in Far Eastern Economic Review, The Wall Street Journal, Index on Censorship, the South China Morning Post and other publications.

Cheng Jinfu (程金福)

Cheng’s primary research interests are communications theory and politics, and mainland and Hong Kong media development. His research writings have appeared in Hong Kong’s 21st Century journal and Shanghai’s Journalism Quarterly. He has also been a recent op-ed contributor to Southern Metropolis Daily.
