Background

Cash met Scanlon when they both worked in Xtra-vision on Baggot Street, Dublin, asking him to join a group he was in of which Tim Czerniak was also a member. That band had no plan and a new band was designed when Scanlon sat down on a bench in Ranelagh, Dublin alongside Czerniak and Cash. Scanlon has said they listed bands they liked and decided on the band's image, including their website and the visuals of their live shows. He said they had “a very clear manifesto about the kind of sound we wanted and the kind of thing we wanted to do, which not many bands in this country [Ireland] were doing.” [cite web|url=http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:VmByacYODngJ:www.hotpress.com/music/interviews/4592930.html+Doing+Things+By+Halves&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&gl=ie|title=Doing Things By Halves|date=2008-06-18|accessdate=2008-10-07|publisher="Hot Press"] Czerniak's brother Elis later joined the band.
