Japanese minelayer Tsugaru

Japanese minelayer Tsugaru

"Tsugaru" was a large minelayer of the Imperial Japanese Navy built by the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal, and commissioned on 22 October 1941, just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Building

"Tsugaru" was similar to but a slightly smaller and improved design of the preceding "Okinoshima" minelayer. The main difference was the change of the main armament from the 140 mm LA guns used on "Okinoshima" to 127 mm dual purpose guns, giving "Tsugaru" better AA capabilities.

War Service

In December 1941, "Tsugaru" participated in the invasion of Guam. [http://www.combinedfleet.com/tsugaru_t.htm]

Fate

On 29 June 1944 "Tsugaru" was sunk after being torpedoed by the submarine USS|Darter|SS-227. [http://www.combinedfleet.com/tsugaru_t.htm]
