Austro-Hungarian submarine U-IV

Austro-Hungarian submarine U-IV

Austro-Hungarian submarine "U-IV." was part of the Austro-Hungarian Navy's U-boat fleet during the First World War.

She was built in 1908 and survived the war.

Early history

"U IV" was built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy ("KuK Kreigsmarine") by Germania of Kiel, using their double-hulled design utilized for U-boats of the Imperial German Navy. She was launched in 1908 and commissioned into the KuK in 1909.

ervice history

"U IV" saw service in the the First World War with the KuK’s U-boat fleet; as Italy was neutral at this stage of the conflict, "U IV"’s operations were against French and British forces in the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas. After Italy’s entry into the war in May 1915 "U IV" also operated against the Italian fleet.

On 9 June 1915 she sighted the British cruiser HMS "Dublin" travelling at high speed and with a destroyer escort. Despite this, her commander "Linienschiffsleutnant" Rudolph Singule was able to attack "Dublin", hitting her with a torpedo. "Dublin" survived, but suffered extensive damage, while "U IV" escaped.

On 18 June 1915 "U IV" intercepted the Italian cruiser "Garibaldi", which had been engaged in shelling Imperial installations at Dubrovnik (Ragusa) and Cattaro. She attacked; "Garibaldi" was hit by a torpedo and sank.

In May 1917 "U IV" took part in the KuK’s raid on the Otranto Barrage. She was deployed off Valone to intercept Allied vessels coming to the Barrage, but was unable to take any offensive action.

"U IV" was one of KuK’s more successful U-boats; she sank 12 ships of 18,264 GRT, and sank or damaged two warships.

Fate

"U IV" survived the conflict, and was surrendered to the Allies with the rest of the Austro-Hungarian Navy at the peace settlement.
