Andrew Stewart Jamieson

Andrew Stewart Jamieson (b. July 1961) is a British-born heraldic artist and heraldist, and one of the principal proponents of those arts today.

Background

Born in London, England, Jamieson is the son of Henry Victor Jamieson and Jocelyn Brenda Jamieson. He was educated at Bishop Ward Catholic Comprehensive (Dagenham, Essex), Ridgeway High School (Memphis, Tennessee, USA) and Gillingham School, Dorset. His formal artistic training was received at Salisbury College of Art (1978-1979) and at Reigate School of Art (1980-1983). As an heraldic artist, Jamieson holds a DipAD Hons.

Jamieson is a member of the The Heraldry Society of Scotland, and of the Clan Gunn Society. He holds the post of Chairman of the Society of Heraldic Arts (SHA) and is a Craftmember of that body. He is a Brother of the Artworkers Guild, London. He was awarded the Corell Prize for Artistic Excellence at the Governor's Residence in Ottawa in 1996, following the exhibition of 'Twelve Masters of Heraldic Art' at the Museum of Civilisation (Ottawa).

Jamieson's decorative artistic style in the field of heraldry is inspired primarily by English, French and German medieval examples of the 14th and 15th Centuries. Key mentors to Jamieson in the development of his technique and style include Anthony Wood and Donald Jackson, and to a lesser degree both Norman Mainwaring and Dan Escott.

Professional Work

Jamieson was formerly the heraldic assistant to the Queen's Scribe, assisting in the production of letters patent for new admissions to or promotions within the House of Lords. He has also worked as Herald Painter for HM College of Arms in London, preparing patents of new grants or variations of arms for presentation to both individual and corporate grantees.

Working to commission, and utilising many of the techniques of the monastic scriptorium, Jamieson has specialised in the production of coats of arms, family trees, presentation scrolls, certificates and illuminated books. His clients have included the British Royal Household, several dynastic families in Europe, the Roman Catholic Church, the Armed Forces, the Livery Companies of the City of London, as well as many corporate entities and private individuals worldwide.

Jamieson has also taught several summer schools in Heraldry, Calligraphy and Manuscript Illumination, including a series of Workshop Retreats at Buckfast Abbey, Devon.

He has exhibited his work variously, including at events in London, Edinburgh, St Andrews and New York.

The Saint Peter Codex

Jamieson is currently engaged in producing The Saint Peter Codex, which is to be one of the largest armorial hand-painted and illuminated manuscript books produced since the end of the Middle Ages, containing over ninety full armorial representations, each set within illuminated borders. The armorials will record the heraldry of the popes from c1216 to the present day.

The Codex will contain a short armorial of the principal patrons, various prayers and dedication pages, along with the names of those patron donors who have supported the project. The Codex is expected to take four years to complete and to be bound.

The presentation of the Codex to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI will take place at a special ceremony in Rome, and it is expected that the Codex will be placed as a permanent addition to the Vatican Library.
