Addison Hutton

Addison Hutton

Addison Hutton (1834 - 1916) was a Philadelphia architect whose landmark designs include many suave residences along Philadelphia’s Main Line, Pennsylvania college campus buildings, courthouses, hospitals and the 1891 Carnegie Library of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Early Life

Addison Hutton was born in November 28, 1834. He grew up in Westmoreland County, southeast of Pittsburgh. He was the son of Joel Hutton, a Quaker carpenter and Ann Mains. [rootsweb.com] At an early age, he became fond of the "solid necessities of building" and enjoyed working along side his father. Like his father, Addison would vary between carpeting and school. A young man named Robert Grimacy gave him lessons in architecture. It was then that Addison Hutton considered it to be a possible direction in his own life.

Archtectural Practice

Addison Hutton studied architecture with Samuel Sloan, who was a leading Philadelphia architect. He later became a partner with Sloan and was able to bring numerous academic commissions to their office, due to his Philadelphia Quaker connections.

On the 10th of October, 1865, Addison married Rebecca Morris, Philadelphia industrialist Israel Morris's daughter. They had one child, a girl named Mary who was born September 1, 1869.
