List of tallest buildings by U.S. state

List of tallest buildings by U.S. state

The following is a list of the tallest buildings by U.S. state, including the District of Columbia.

Current tallest buildings

Upcoming/proposed tallest buildings

These future buildings, if completed, would overtake the title of the tallest building in their respective states.

Methodology

The building heights compared here are calculated from the ground level to the architectural top. Only continuous occupiable space is included. Non-freestanding structures, observational towers, and communication towers are excluded (North Dakota boasts the largest guyed mast structure in the world), as are antennae extending from the structure top. For more information, see building heights.

tatistics

* The height of the tallest building in the US (Sears Tower, in Chicago), at 1451 feet (442 m), is more than the combined heights of the tallest buildings in Wyoming, Vermont, Maine, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Idaho.

** Four of the buildings are attributed to JPMorgan Chase. Three each are named for Bank of America and US Bancorp, with two for Wells Fargo.
** 6 include part of nation's name in their title (the 3 Bank of America buildings and the 3 US Bank buildings). In addition, 2 use the word National and 1 uses the word Republic.
** 5 include the state of location in their title.
** 5 include the city of location in their title. In addition, 2 (Delaware and Washington) include a different metropolitan city in their title.
* 18 are in the state's capital city.
* Both Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine sport their respective states' tallest building.
* 40 are in the state's largest city. 6 are in the second largest city (Florida, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Tennessee). 3 are in the third largest city (Alabama, Connecticut, and Mississippi). 1 is in the fifth largest city (Vermont). Note that, although the building locations are indicated by municipal area, the city sizes are defined by population within the city borders. For more info, see List of U.S. states' largest cities.

However, because the structure is not fully habitable, it is excluded from this list. Please see the Methodology for further information.:F.note label|note06|F|^Previously held by the Zip Feed Mill until its demolition in 2005. Qwest Tower is currently uncertified, and some dispute has been noted suggesting St. Joseph's Cathedral (also in Sioux Falls) may actually be taller.
